TAMER AND SHREW
Huge domed palaces, shady staircases, dim lights, less number of people, total quiteness and the most importantly dolled up women, this mostly sums up Elizabethan era (age of Shakespeare).
In 1590, William Shakespeare wrote a play "Taming of the Shrew".
Taming: somebody who is taking control over us.
Shrew: a person who has bad habit of being agressive.
In 2020, i.e.21st century, we still cannot see the development. The development not just by infrastructure but the development of mind.
In the play, Taming of the shrew the main protagonist Petruchio is a tamer and his to be wife Katherine is a shrew. The reason behind this is, Petruchio always tried to change his women into someone she wasn't. He always forced her to be well-behaved, the one who obeys him. For him, she always was foul-tempered, sharp-tongued woman, whenever she tried to keep her point. But he never understood that her intelligence and her independence never let her settle to be an ordinary lady. Finally, Pertruchio started taming her saying she should be a lady that society accepts. The one who is eligible as a bride for him. And one day she quits on being a talented version of herself and remains being just a wife ...
Being a woman in Elizabethan age was a curse i would say. Woman were asked to be submissive and if they didn't agree to it they were tamed same like Katherine was forcefully done.
You all must be thinking why in 21st century are we discussing this..
Because i am sure even today there are many women craving for such equality from husband, from parents, and even from society. It's time to be human and accept women the way she is.
Do you think this play was mysogenic..?
Most importantly..
Why do you think Shakespeare wanted the women to be an ideal one..?
